The irrepressible hero of Nicky and the Big, Bad Wolves returns in another humorous and heartwarming story. It is Mother Rabbit's birthday, and all of Nicky's brothers and sisters are hard at work, making birthday presents for her. But not Nicky. He is outside playing. ""Hey, Nicky,"" the others call. ""Aren't you going to make a present for Mother?"" ""Of course I am,"" Nicky replies. ""But I'm trying to think of something really special.""Soon, however, Nicky gets to work, too. He is determined that his birthday picture will be the best one of all-something truly fantastic! Nicky dreams of a splendid birthday adventure for Mother Rabbit, but can his talent as an artist match his powerful imagination? Mother Rabbit may not quite comprehend Nicky's work of art, but wisely she understands and appreciates the love that inspired it.

About the Author:

Valeri Gorbachev is the author and illustrator of a number of children's books, both in the United States and Europe, including Nicky And The Big Bad Wolves and Where is the Apple Pie? Mr. Gorbachev immigrated to the United States from the Ukraine in 1991 and now lives with his family in Brooklyn, New York.

From School Library Journal:

PreSchool-Grade 1-Imagination is the key to Nicky's birthday present for his mother. The bunny's siblings each draw a simple picture (a carrot, sun, tree, and flower) to give to her. Nicky, on the other hand, tells an elaborate story to go along with his artwork. His vibrant scribbles look more like modern art than anything in the family garden, but Mother Rabbit loves all of the presents and gives each of her children a hug. The bright-eyed, happy-looking rabbits are slightly reminiscent of Richard Scarry's animals. The watercolor and pen-and-ink illustrations are clear, large, and colorful, making this an enjoyable book to look at, even if the story is a little flat. A serviceable springboard for a drawing session.
