Little Fox is curious about what lies on the other side of the river. But the older animals tell frightening tales of dreadful witches and trolls. But when Little Fox spots Raccoon on the far shore, he discovers that there are equally frightening stories about the dangers on his own side. The two new friends soon discover that delights, and not dangers, are on both sides of the river. A lighthearted lesson about the foolhardiness of listening to rumors.

Kindergarten-Grade 4-As Little Fox sits and contemplates what may lie on the other side of the stream, Squirrel and Badger warn him of the horrors over there, where they have never been. Walking along the riverbank, he meets Raccoon across the stream. She admires his bravery, for he lives on "the dangerous side of the river." Fox crosses the water on a fallen log, the metaphorical bridge to understanding, and learns from Raccoon the tales of her land as she takes him to explore its beauty. She then ventures over to explore his side. The successful journey of this pair lifts the fear and misunderstanding that all the animals have lived with for so long, and together they build a bridge (with technical assistance from Beaver) to open hearts, minds, and lands to their neighbors. This allegorical tale may help children to understand the burden of war and hostility that surrounds them. Naturalistic watercolors of forest scenes and animals create a warm, pleasant atmosphere, inviting readers into the story. Overall, this is an enjoyable addition to large collections.
