A tiny aphid named Anna lives on a big green leaf with her family. But Anna is different from the other aphids. She is curious to discover what lies beyond their green world. So Anna sets off to explore. In an entertaining visual guessing game, we see things from Anna's point of view. An ordinary bedroom is a vast, uncharted universe. A light bulb is a burning sun, a baby's head, the moon. The rug is a red planet's fuzzy forest. Dangers lurk everywhere. A burst balloon becomes an exploding planet, the vacuum cleaner a powerful black hold that sucks everything in its path. Having explored enough for one day, Anna heads back through the emptiness of the universe to her own green homeland. There, she reports on her findings: "I didn't meet any other forms of intelligent life," she tells her father. "But the universe is so big! Who knows what is out there waiting for us?"

Christine Goppel was born in Regensburg, Germany. She studied at the Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany, specializing in storytelling through photography, film, and animation. She created Anna Aphid for her degree dissertation. It is her first book for North-South.From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 3–An aphid wants to know what lies beyond her big green world. Her curiosity is so great that she sprouts wings and flies off to explore. First, she flies too close to the sun, then lands on the moon. Next she is off to ride a comet, and then she has an encounter with a black hole. She is frightened by a Big Bang, lands in a bubbling sea, and is rescued by a benevolent giant. Readers see that Annas world is a plant on a windowsill, and that she is flying around a babys room, landing on normal household objects. Using saturated primary colors, thickly applied to a textured surface, Goppel presents the insects universe quite realistically. Both the story and the illustrations will appeal to childrens imaginations and may leave them asking questions about their own world.–Angela J.
