9780737704051: Presidents and Their Decisions - Richard M. Nixon (hardcover edition)

Richard Nixon instituted environmental reforms and substantially improved U.S. relations with China. However, these accomplishments were overshadowed by his administration's slow handling of America's withdrawal from the war in Vietnam and the infamous Watergate scandal, which ultimately forced Nixon to resign rather than face impeachment. This anthology explores the virtues and flaws of one of America's most controversial presidents.

Review:

"The titles in the new Presidents and Their Decisions series begin with a balanced introductory essay on a president's life and the controversies that surrounded him while he was in office. Then each of the major issues is explored in essays that attack or defend the administration's policy . The selections, which appeared during or not long after the event were written by a largely familiar cast of Washington pundits and players, are drawn from a variety of sources - magazine articles, think-tank papers and books."
-- Booklist (Febraury 2001) (Booklist 20010215)

"Each section includes four or five viewpoints, most of which are excerpts from scholarly texts or memoirs. The writers range across the political spectrum and although this is not precisely an opposing-viewpoints format, readers do see a variety of opinions and they are encouraged to draw their own conclusions."

From School Library Journal:

Grade 9 Up-This book opens with a 31-page biographical sketch that concentrates on Nixon's political career, followed by positive and negative assessments of some of his important decisions and policies while president. Chapters examine Nixon's handling of the environmental movement, the Vietnam War, the normalization of relations with China, and the Watergate scandal. Each section includes four or five viewpoints, most of which are excerpts from scholarly texts or memoirs. The writers range across the political spectrum and although this is not precisely an opposing-viewpoints format, readers do see a variety of opinions and they are encouraged to draw their own conclusions. Although some of the excerpts were written almost contemporaneously with the Nixon Administration, most are more recent, which gives readers a better historical perspective on the issues. Excerpts from 13 original documents, an extensive time line, and a bibliography are appended. A few very average-quality, black-and-white photos and an editorial cartoon are included. Report writers who are seeking thoughtful policy analysis not found in most YA biographies will be rewarded here. With its focus on how Nixon's actions affected American policies, the book would be most useful as a companion to single-issue titles such as William Dudley's The Vietnam War (Greenhaven, 1997).
