From School Library Journal

Grade 8 Up–Basic, accurate information about many aspects of the war. The 442 alphabetically arranged entries, which range in length from a single paragraph to one to two pages, cover conventional topics such as military and civilian leaders, battles, and weapons and equipment. Netzley also includes an array of related subjects, such as soldier pay, food, codes and ciphers, musicians, economic factors affecting both sides, and even footwear worn by troops. The well-written, objective entries are cross-referenced. An appendix gives casualty figures for major battles and the chronology includes battles and political events. Average-quality, black-and-white photos and reproductions of period art, with short captions, add little to the text. Although only a single volume, this encyclopedia covers many of the same topics as the more lavishly illustrated and slightly easier-to-read set The Civil War (Grolier, 2004). Netzley's solid volume will be helpful to students needing introductory research material.–Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, MO
