Grade 10 Up–Sixteen exemplary, scholarly excerpts from biographies of Mao, histories of China, and periodical articles written by recognized academics and experts follow a lengthy introduction that summarizes Mao's life. Although the material ranges from 1965 to 2001, much of the information is current–nine of the essays were published between 1999 and 2001. Mao's political, not personal, history is the focus of the volume. His evolution into a Communist, involvement in the Long March and China's civil war, and programs to unify the country are discussed, sometimes with articles presenting opposing opinions on his successes or failures. Scholars also comment on programs for public health, agricultural reform, the Cultural Revolution, and the many victims who suffered and, in millions of cases, died as a result of his leadership. The text includes short biographical sketches of major figures, an appendix with a selection of Mao's writings, and a chronology. Although teens looking for critical assessments of Mao's rule will find this compilation useful, readers with some knowledge of China's history will more fully appreciate its value. Most students would be better able to navigate the simpler volumes about Mao by Christine Hatt (World Almanac Library, 2003) and Louise Chipley Slavicek (Chelsea, 2003).–Joanne K.
