The war on terrorism has renewed the debate over immigration, both legal and illegal. The authors in this anthology present differing views on the impact of immigration, the treatment of immigrants, and how legal and illegal immigration should be managed.

Gr. 10-12. Books in the Current Controversies series reprint essays that express different points of view on aspects of a single subject, in this case, immigration (for the most part, immigration issues in America). Chapters address four questions: Does immigration constitute a serious problem? Do immigrants in the U.S. receive fair treatment? How should the U.S. respond to illegal immigrants? How can the U.S. control immigration? Varying in readability, the 33 articles clearly articulate different points of view. Often, opposing opinions are presented in tandem. For example, Phyllis Schlafly's "Dual Citizenship Should Be Discouraged" is followed directly by David A. Martin and T. Alexander Aleinikoff's "Dual Citizenship Should Be Encouraged." Helpful appendixes include an annotated list of organizations and a lengthy bibliography of books and articles. Libraries with earlier books on the subject should consider updating, as the terrorist attacks of 2001 have affected the debate. Each essay reprinted here was originally published in 2000 or later, and many first appeared in 2004. An excellent resource for students writing reports or preparing for debates. Carolyn Phelan
