This Opposing Viewpoints title presents various views of a topic of direct relevance to many young people today, through the series’ signature assortment of short, previously published essays. The draft isn’t the only issue brought up; related topics, such as gays in the military and the use of military contractors, are also covered. (The use of military contractors probably doesn’t receive enough coverage, given the topic’s recent prominence in the news.) Some of the essays come from major newspapers or magazines, but most are position papers from think tanks or special-interest journals. All of the essays were written in the past few years, when news about the overstretched military has come to the fore. As often happens with this series, the writing can be dry, but there is enough substance here to support reports or debate-team research. A long list of additional articles for further reading accompanies each of the book’s four sections, and the back matter includes discussion questions, a bibliography, and organizations to contact. Grades 9-12. --Todd Morning
