Assuming familiarity with first-year chemistry and mechanics courses, this workbook-style text introduces the concepts of entropy and free energy to understand such diverse problems as engine efficiency, chemical equilibrium and phase transitions, molecular binding to surfaces and biomolecules, thermal radiation and global warming, and electronic properties of semiconductors. Knowledge of basic calculus (simple derivatives and integrals) is assumed. Numerous problems are provided with solutions.

About the Author:
Professor Wolfe received his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1971. His thesis work involved optically induced polarization and maser action of nuclear spins in a crystal. He continued at Berkeley as a research physicist, studying optically excited semiconductors at low temperatures. In 1976, he joined the Department of Physics at the University of Illinois. At Illinois, Professor Wolfe has taught a full range of courses from freshman to graduate level. He has been instrumental in developing introductory courses in quantum mechanics and thermal physics for science and engineering majors. His book, entitled Elements of Thermal Physics, along with interactive lectures and group problem-solving sections, teach practical methods for solving real-world problems. As Associate Head for Graduate Studies, he has helped both undergrads and graduate students get started in teaching and research. In research, Prof. Wolfe is a renowned expert on the imaging and thermodynamics of excitons and phonons in semiconductors. His 1998 book, Phonon Imaging, describes the propagation of phonons and ultrasound in solids. A Fellow in the American Physical Society, Professor Wolfe has headed multi-investigator programs for the Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation. He was awarded the 2004 Frank Isakson Prize for Optical Effects in Solids of the American Physical Society, "for contributions to the fundamental understanding of excitonic matter and ballistic phonons in semiconductors, made possible by pioneering development of graphic imaging techniques." In 2010, he was honored with the Paul Klemens Award for his seminal contributions to many branches of phonon physics. Professor James P. Wolfe Emeritus Professor of Physics University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign j-wolfe@illinois.edu
