9780738512488: Rockland (MA) (Images of America)

Rockland's roots run deeply into American history. Originally a village of Abington, Rockland broke away in 1874 to form its own economically strong and enterprising shoe-manufacturing community. This book transports the reader back in time to meet six-year-old George Rockland Hunt, the "first citizen of Rockland"; Hulda Barker Loud, the irrepressible editor of the Rockland Independent; and Judge George Kelley leading his parade through the center of town. Rockland captures the lives of the merchants of Union Street, the heyday of the local shoe industry, and the stories of Rockland's past as told through the eyes of the camera.

About the Author:

Donald Cann, a leading historian of the Rockland community and former member of the Rockland Historical Commission, teams with John Galluzzo, author of four Arcadia titles on the histories of Hull and Nantasket Beach and Scituate, to bring the story of this important Massachusetts community to life in Rockland.

Review:

With the release of their newest book as a duo, the pair continue to make history. Rockland resident and historian Don Cann and Hanover resident John Galluzzo have released their 11th history book together. It is called "Rockland Through Time" and it is comprised of yesterday-and-today photographs of the town. "There s a lot of old pictures of places in Rockland in the book and we tried to match those up with what the particular sites look like today," Cann said. He added that he and Galluzzo did a similar book about the City of Quincy. Cann said he and Galluzzo used the historic Dyer Memorial Library to get old photos for the book and did a great deal of consulting with the Historical Society of Olde Abington, as Rockland was once considered part of Abington. The duo also consulted with the Rockland Historical Commission for the book. Cann said he is thrilled to be part of another historic project with Galluzzo. "I m really (Galluzzo s) sidekick on this one," he said. "He did all the hard work." "For us, we really wanted people to be able to see the change in historic places in town," Galluzzo added, regarding the book. "This book is also a call for people to preserve their history through photographs, and to encourage them to share those photos with local historic societies. This town won't look the same in 50 years, so eventually, we will need another one of these books." --Rockland Standard
