The city of Mesa initially began with a tiny colonizing expedition sent from Utah by leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1876. Agriculture became the foundation of the town of Lehi, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, and the city of Mesa, now the third-largest municipality in the state of Arizona. About the Author:
Authors D. L. Turner and Catherine H. Ellis are both descendants of early Latter-day Saints in Arizona. Turner is a fifth-generation Arizonan and Mesa resident; Ellis is a descendent of Mormon Battalion leader Jefferson Hunt. Drawing both on personal collections and local, state, and church repositories, Turner and Ellis present many rare and never-before-published photographs to tell the story of these pioneers.
