Charles Stewart, a Scotsman saddened by the death of his first wife, Margaret McNab, left his infant daughter with his paternal grandparents and headed west from his native New York to begin a new life. It was the early 1850s when Stewart arrived in the territory that was to become southeastern Minnesota. Here he saw the Root River as a potential power source for a flour mill. He received permission to dam the river, which created Lake Florence, a longtime attraction in Stewartville, the city named in Stewart’s honor. The area Stewart settled was known for its rich, fertile soil, its abundant timber stands, its wildlife, and its natural water supply, including the river.

About the Author:

Richard Warren Sears, founder of Sears, Roebuck and Company, was born in Stewartville on December 7, 1863, and lived for about six years in a home that still stands along Main Street. The home is now the headquarters of the Stewartville Area Historical Society, which maintains photographs and other historical items that tell the stories of the pioneers who settled the land and built new lives in Stewartville, High Forest, Pleasant Grove, Racine, and Simpson. Some of the pioneers who left indelible footprints are included in this book.

"The Stewartville Area," Stewartville Area Historical Society: There's a lot more to the history of Stewartville than the Richard Sears house, as this Images of America paperback shows. Like earlier volumes on Rochester, Lanesboro and other area towns, the Stewartville book is about 125 pages, chock-a-block with pics of Stewartville landmarks, people and gatherings spanning the town's 150 years. Every native will want a copy. (Arcadia Publishing, $21.99.)
