9780738562681: Weehawken, NJ (IMG) (Images of America)

Although less than one square mile in area, Weehawken’s rich history extends more than 400 years to when Dutch explorers first dropped anchor in Weehawken Cove. The town commands a unique location overlooking the Hudson River, with sweeping views of New York City. Its story begins with Weehawken’s early bucolic estates, the idyllic attractions of the magnificent Palisades, and its notorious hidden dueling grounds, where Alexander Hamilton met his end at the hands of Aaron Burr in 1804. By the mid-19th century, a shift toward urban industrial development changed the landscape, as evidenced by the iconic 1883 Weehawken water tower and the sprawling, long-gone 1890s Eldorado Amusement Park that brought throngs of visitors via the largest passenger elevator in the world at that time. The construction of the Lincoln Tunnel as well as the developments of the town’s neighborhoods, commerce, and government all helped to shape Weehawken’s past and future.

Review:

Title: Weehawken kicks off year-long celebration of 150th anniversary

Author: Jennifer Kim

Publisher: The Jersey Journal

Date: 2/4/2009
The township kicked off a year-long celebration of its 150th anniversary today -- and in a fitting gesture, a pair of authors presented the township with a birthday present.
Lauren Sherman and Ellen Robb Gaulkin co-authors of "Weehawken -- Images of America," gave a copy to Mayor Richard Turner yesterday at the ceremony at the Weehawken Public Library.
Gaulkin said it was a grueling task compiling photos and documents of 150 years of Weehawken's history, but "It was so much fun though. We learned more about the township that we didn't know about before."
"People will take a step back into time and I think they'll really enjoy it."
Turner said that the township has worked hard to preserve its small-town identity.
"We've been restoring the public facilities of Weehawken over the years but we've still preserved that small-town character in an urban atmosphere," he said.
Long-time and Councilman Robert Sosa has witnessed gradual changes over the years.

"There's never been a template for this town," Sosa said. "There's always been some kind of diversification in this small community. That's why it's been so great to document the town's history with pictures, documents and memorabilia in a book."
Weehawken will celebrate its 150th anniversary with events throughout the year. The first event will be held on March 15, the official date of the town's founding.
That day, the township will mark the milestone with a reenactment of the first town meeting as well as a presentation of the 150th anniversary proclamation. "Weehawken -- Images of America" will officially go on sale on March 15 at local retailers, online bookstores and Arcadia Publishing.

Known as the little town across from New York City, Weehawken has a story all its own. Just in time for the community’s 150th anniversary, Weehawken Historical Commission members Lauren Sherman and Ellen Robb Gaulkin present the local history using more than 200 vintage images in the new book, Weehawken.
The majority of the images in Weehawken are from the Historical Commission’s collection and from a few residents with large personal collections. A number of individuals lent or donated a smaller trove of treasured postcards and old photos previously unknown to the Commission for the book.
Also available is a set of 15 postcards featuring a selection of vintage images from Weehawken. The set retails for $7.99.
The authors hope both products “will instill a further sense of pride in Weehawken residents and let other readers know that Weehawken’s history is much more than just the site of the Hamilton Burr duel and the entrance to the Lincoln tunnel.”
Highlights of Weehawken:

· The Eldorado Amusement Park from 1891 until 1894, which has fascinated long-time and new residents alike

· Photographs of areas that were completely transformed by the advent of the Lincoln Tunnel

· Early bucolic estates, the idyllic attractions of the magnificent Palisades, and its notorious hidden dueling grounds

· The iconic 1883 Weehawken water tower
Profits from book sales will be donated to the Weehawken Historical Commission.
