Synopsis
With Moore County, author Richard Schloegl has created an enticing look back at the past of a region rich in local lore and tradition. Readers journey back to a fascinating time when the introduction of the railroad spurred great developments throughout the towns and virgin pine forests of Moore County. The coming of the Raleigh and Augusta Railroad in 1877 dramatically changed the face of virtually every community in the region. Small towns sprang up along its route to serve as shipping points for the expanding lumber and turpentine industries--trades that would energize and sustain the region for over two decades. When the forest resources began to show signs of exhaustion, the resort industry took hold. The timbered-over land was inexpensive and the communities of Jackson Springs, Southern Pines, Pinebluff, and Pinehurst quickly developed. These areas became health resorts, known for the medicinal qualities of their mineral water, fresh air, and gentle climate. The introduction of golf in 1897 changed the face of the
region once again. Pinehurst was soon established as a golfing mecca of international renown, where names like Donald Ross, Glenna Collett, Francis Ouimet, and Harry Varden were forever etched into golf legend.

About the Author
In this new photographic history, over 200 images, many rare and previously unpublished, have been gathered from the collections of the Moore County Historical Association, the Carthage Museum, the Given Memorial and Moore County Libraries, and the private archives of local families. Richard Schloegl's fondness for the area and knowledge of its history are clearly evident in his inspiring and informative new work.
