Review:

Title: Photo book covers 100 years of Laguna Beach history
Author: Chris Caesar

Publisher: The Orange County Register

Date: 3/26/09
Local film student Claire Marie Vogel may be finishing her degree at California Institute of the Arts this spring, but her first major release won't be on the big screen.
Instead, the resident has authored a photographic history of Laguna Beach, incorporating more than 500 photos from the Historical Society, library and residents with ties to the city's past.
The book, from Arcadia Publishing, is one of several in a series chronicling local histories throughout the United States.
"I moved around a lot as a child, but I moved to Laguna when I was a junior in high school," Vogel said. "I consider it my hometown."
Spanning a hundred-year period between the late 19th and 20th centuries, "Laguna Beach" offers residents a surprising look at the city's earliest days as an art colony through the late 1970s.
Vogel said many of the pictures of late-19th-century Laguna impressed her – especially the book's opening photograph of families camping outside Main Beach in the 1870s.
"The city has tried hard to maintain its feel, but, of course, things have changed," she said.
On the other hand, some things remain the same – the city, sometimes called the "Riviera of America, always has provided a cool bubble of protection from inland heat.
Vogel also plans to write a book on the history of Cal Arts.
"It's a great school and people have heard of it," she said. "But not many know its story."
Vogel will sign copies of "Laguna Beach" on April 7 at Latitude 33 Bookshop, 311 Ocean Ave., Laguna Beach.

Title: Vintage Ingénue

Author: Dinah Shields

Publisher: The Laguna Beach Independent

Date: 4/3/2009
"My hope for the book is that of any historian, that the stories told will live on and be remembered for many more years to come. I also hope that locals and visitors will see how the town has been preserved so they can continue helping to keep the area as beautiful and unique as it has been for so many years."
All this wisdom, and only 21 years old. Still a student. Planning her second book already.
Debut author Claire Marie Vogel has visited Laguna on and off all her life, and moved here in 2002. Although she relocated to Los Angeles last year to enroll in college, she considers it her home town.
She will be signing her newly released book, "Laguna Beach: Images of America," at Latitude 33 Books on April 4 at 7 p.m. and at Laguna Beach Books on April 25 at 4 p.m.
Hers is the latest title in an esteemed series from Arcadia Publishing, a specialist in collections of vintage photographs of towns throughout America. Visual historical records such as this are crucial these days, when cottages die that McMansions may be born. Indeed, it is sad to note that many of the buildings seen in the book are no longer standing.
Vogel connected with Arcadia a little circuitously. For three years she worked at Latitude 33 Books, where customers remember her vividly as someone who could connect them with a great new book to read. While she was there, she came to know a good amount about local interest books and the demand for them in Laguna.
"When all the other Laguna history books eventually went out of print," she said, "I saw that tourists and locals were still asking for books on the town."
The store carried some of Arcadia's Images of America series on nearby southern California towns and --The Orange County Register

Book Description Arcadia Publishing (SC), United States, 2009. Other merchandise. Book Condition: New. 150 x 119 mm. Language: English . Brand New Book. As one of the West Coastas most unique and beautiful resort cities, Laguna Beach has thrived as an enduring enclave of art culture, a destination of hidden beaches, and a coastline rich in natural wonders, which its officials and residents strive to maintain. Settlers arrived in the 1870s, and by the summer of 1918 Lagunaas first art gallery opened, featuring works by a growing collective of local artists. Hundreds of visitors came on opening day and, in the next month, 2,000 more visited the small art gallery. In 1932, Laguna started what would become a world-renowned event called the Festival of the Arts and later added the equally famous Pageant of the Masters. Since its simple beginnings as a small village situated where Laguna Canyon opens onto the Pacific shoreline to the reason there are traffic jams on Coast Highway during hot-month weekends, this southern Orange County jewel has continued to be a great draw for beachgoers, painters, and nature lovers the world over.
