9780738572116: North Vancouver's Lonsdale Neighbourhood (Historic Canada)

North Vancouver occupies one of the worldÂ’s most scenic urban settings. Lonsdale Avenue, running from the waters of Burrard Inlet to the mountains of the Coast Range, is the communityÂ’s de facto main street. In early 1903, Alfred St. George Hamersley

purchased a substantial parcel of land from Henry Heywood Lonsdale and James Pemberton FellÂ’s Lonsdale Estate. HamersleyÂ’s property, called the Town of Lonsdale, later became the town site of North Vancouver. In North VancouverÂ’s early years, Lonsdale Avenue was the spine along which the community developed. Lonsdale is still North VancouverÂ’s most important street and acts as the main artery for commercial, political, and social life. Through rare vintage photographs illustrating how people lived, played, and worked, North VancouverÂ’s Lonsdale Neighbourhood explores the communityÂ’s fascinating history.

Review:

Title: Historic Lonsdale Avenue is explored in a new book

Author: Katharine Sawchuk

Publisher: News Radio 1130

Date: 1/10/10
Lonsdale Avenue forms the backbone of North Vancouver, running from Burrard Inlet into the Coast Mountains. But how much do you know about the area's history? A new book called North Vancouver's Lonsdale Neighbourhood reveals many interesting details.
From transportation to architecture, author Shervin Shahriari had a lot of inspiration for this book. He illustrates how people lived, played and worked through rare vintage photographs. One photo Shahriari likes is of Phyllis Munday wearing snowshoes on Grouse Mountain in 1924.

He says Munday was the first female hiker to reach Mount Robson. "She would take the streetcar and in those days women wore bloomers to hike and so she would take off her heavy skirt, would hide it behind a log and near the station there. She would go hiking, come back, put it on and would take the streetcar back."
Other photos include landmarks like the Queen Mary School and the opening of the Palace Hotel - which he believes was the first building in B.C. to have a rooftop garden.
North Vancouver's Lonsdale Neighbourhood is part of Arcadia Publishing's Historic Canada Series. You can find the book on-line and at bookstores everywhere.
