The descent into Idaho from the Montana border down Lookout Pass on Interstate 90 largely follows the trail Capt. John Mullan blazed over 150 years ago. The Silver Valley is home to Shoshone County’s seat, the historic silver-mining city of Wallace, which has been something of a phoenix rising out of the ashes of two great fires.
Along with Wallace, the valley encompasses many other small mining towns, such as Mullan, Silverton, Osburn, Kellogg, Smelterville, Pinehurst, and Kingston, with diverse histories that are both humorous and heartbreaking. It also surrounds the Cataldo Mission, Idaho’s oldest standing building, built by the Jesuits and the Coeur d’Alene tribe in 1848.

About the Author:

The Historic Wallace Preservation Society has compiled the information and images for this book. The Silver Valley’s story reads like a dime novel―men, money, mining, murder, mayhem, and prostitution―and locals are proud of it all. The society hopes this book will be enjoyed by all readers, and visitors are welcome anytime.

Review:

Title: Historic Wallace Preservation Society has new book

Author: Staff Writer

Publisher: Shoshone News Press

Date: 12/15/2010

The Historic Wallace Preservation Society, Inc. is proud to announce the completion of a new book, "The Silver Valley." This book is published by Arcadia Publishers and is part of the Images of America collection. Many Idaho towns are already part of the collection and it is a fine honor to be included in this group.
"The Silver Valley" is a small book with pictures of our mining district and communities within this 23 miles of the Interstate 90 corridor. We are honored to have a large photographic collection to draw from for the pictures, and many local residents have contributed to the history for this book.
Please join the Board and Directors and volunteers of the Historic Wallace Preservation Society in the celebration of this book on Saturday, Dec. 18 at Valley Vintage. We are planning a bit of wine tasting and a spot of tea to introduce you to the new book and the latest new wine room in downtown Historic Wallace. The book signing will be from 3 to 5 p.m.
Then share with us through the Yuletide lights of residential and commercial Wallace. The Red Light Garage is cooking a big pot of chili, and just think how much fun we will have singing a few Christmas carols around a fire outside on this evening of Christmas celebration.
Historic Wallace Preservation Society, Inc. (HWPS) is a not-for-profit organization. We actively encourage the preservation of the history in the Silver Valley. However, HWPS is very interested in the growing future of mining and tourism in our communities.
For more information about "The Silver Valley" book, the Wine Tasting or the Literary Tea, please contact Terri at Valley Vintage by calling 208-556-0171.
