SUCCEEDING ON THE CRCT-Grade 8 READING, LANGUATE ARTS, AND WRITING
ABOUT THIS BOOK
This book provides excellent preparation for the Georgia Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT)-Grade 8 Reading, Language Arts, and Writing. Inside you will find exercises designed to provide students with the instruction, practice, and strategies needed to do well on this achievement test.
This book is divided into several parts: a pretest, which introduces students to the sections on the actual test, including:
o multiple-choice questions o writing prompts
o reading selections o language arts section
Following the pretest is a lesson section, which teaches students about the different types of CRCT questions on the reading, language arts, and writing tests, step by step. Students will begin with shorter selections and easier questions and conclude each lesson by completing full-length selections and questions modeled after those on the CRCT. Answer explanations are provided for each question in each lesson. "Tips" are also given below each question to guide students toward answering the question correctly. Finally, this book includes a full-length posttest, which matches the CRCT test in terms of content.
Begin by assigning students the pretest. Answers and answer explanations follow the pretest. Then work through each of the lessons one by one. When students have completed the book, they should complete the posttest. Answers and answer explanations follow the posttest.
HOW TO USE THIS BOOK
FOR STUDENTS: To make getting through the book as easy as possible, we've included icons shown on the next page that highlight sections like lessons, questions, and answers. You'll find that our practice tests are very much like the actual CRCT you'll encounter on test day. The best way to prepare for a test is to practice, so we've included drills with answers throughout the book, and our two practice tests include detailed answers.
FOR PARENTS: Georgia has created grade-appropriate performance standards and core curriculum requirements that are listed in the table in this introduction. Students need to meet these objectives as measured by the CRCT. Our book will help your child review for the CRCT and prepare for the Reading, Language Arts, and Writing exams. It includes review sections, drills, and two practice tests complete with explanations to help your child focus on the areas he/she needs to work on to help master the test.
FOR TEACHERS: No doubt, you are already familiar with the CRCT and its format. Begin by assigning students the pretest. An answer key and detailed explanations follow the pretest. Then work through each of the lessons in succession. When students have completed the subject review, they should move on to the posttest. Answers and answer explanations follow the posttest.
WHY STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO TAKE THE CRCT
CRCT measures the extent to which students are meeting the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS). Georgia teachers and curriculum experts developed the CRCT in cooperation with the Georgia State Board of Education. The Reading and English/Language Arts tests are given to students in Grades 1 through 8. The writing tests are given in Grades 3, 5, 8, and 11.
WHAT'S ON THE CRCT
The reading tests in Grade 8 are given in two 60-minute sessions. Each session consists of reading selections and 25 questions for a total of 50 questions.
The English/Language Arts test in Grade 8 is given in two 60-minute sessions. Each session has 30 questions for a total of 60 questions.
The Writing Assessment is given in one 100-minute session. Students will be given either an expository topic or a persuasive topic and will have the full 100 minutes to write their response.
Reading selections on the CRCT can be fiction or nonfiction informational. Most reading passages are at or near grade level.
