“Dodo” Dillon, retired diplomat and lover of travel to far-away places undertakes to trace a missing American Buddhist monk in Sri Lanka. He follows the trail through the American Embassy in Colombo, a cheap boarding house, a Buddhist seminary, and a remote tea plantation. He is almost killed in a bomb explosion and a bloody clash with insurgents. He finally finds that the monk has starved himself to death in a search for nibbana.

James W. Spain, born in Chicago in 1926, has an M.A. from the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. from Columbia University in New York. A career diplomat, he has been Ambassador to Tanzania, Turkey, Sri Lanka, and at the United Nations. In retirement he lives in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
