Transcending dominant debates of whether Plato's Republic is about the ideal state, the soul, art, or education, Ivor Ludlam's analysis treats the dialogue as pure conversation. Returning to the original Greek, Ludlam examines the dialogue both in its details and in its entirety. The result is a holistic interpretation wherein Ludlam reveals how each character becomes a paradigm for an aspect of the Republic's central theme—the apparent good. Ultimately, it is the individual aspects of apparent good that the characters represent that determines the final course of the dialogue.

Revisioning the central theme of the Republic through the motivations and interactions of its characters, Ludlam provides an innovative, holistic, and dramatic analysis of this foundational work.

From the Back Cover:

This innovative and holistic dramatic analysis of Plato's Republic reveals the dialogue to be a dialectical exercise mirroring the Cave Analogy of Book 7. It leads from shadowy accounts of political and psychic constitutions to the more stable models that are the participants themselves; and from the models seen as paradigms in the ancient Greek sense - minimalist concrete representations of aspects of an abstract concept - to the abstract concept itself that is central to this dialogue, namely apparent good, viewable in all its cardinal aspects thanks to the paradigms. The upward journey to the concept begins with the many shadowy accounts in this dialogue, including not only those pertaining to constitutions, but also, among others, to the philosopher king, art and mimicry, and the Cave Analogy itself. All these peculiar accounts play an essential role in unraveling the coherent dynamic mechanism underlying the philosophical dramatic masterpiece that is Plato's Republic.
