Grade 3-5-In nine three-to-eight page chapters, this serviceable biography presents the life of the medieval Venetian explorer. Following a two-page introduction, the narrative progresses chronologically, addressing Polo's early life before moving on to the journey to the East, his career in China, his return to Venice, his subsequent imprisonment, and the publication of his travels. The presentation is accurate but unexciting, with sepia-toned period illustrations and lackluster textbook-quality pictures. The events and discoveries mentioned in the list of "Other Events of the 13th Century" seem to relate so little to Polo's life and journey that the purpose for inclusion is questionable. Factually correct and devoid of fictionalizing, this bland treatment of the life of one of the first great Western explorers is best used as a source for quick facts. Demi's The Adventures of Marco Polo (Holt, 1982; o.p.) or Gian Paolo Ceserani's Marco Polo (Putnam, 1982; o.p.) are better titles for exploring the mystique of the East and the scope of the man's accomplishments.
