Herb Romero is a military retiree who spent much of his career overseas in cold and hot war operations. He presently lives in South Florida with his family.
Always North is a sequel of The Adventurers. It is a saga of a family intertwined historically with southwest USA beginnings in the 16th century. At that time, King Phillip II directed resettlement of Spanish families from New Spain to a remote northern region that in three centuries would become the American southwest. This book provides the reader with insight into the lives of early Spaniard settlers who after a six months long trek to their new home, lived under extremely harsh conditions; young and old dying from some unknown disease, while others are killed by marauders. For the first two hundred years in their new kingdom, Spaniards follow royal laws of New Spain until that dominion is overthrown by a Creole peasantry. Because of their antiquated communications system, it takes many months before Spanish settlers find they are under Mexican rule that would last for twenty five years. After the American-Mexican war in 1848, the United States takes over the vast western territory. Then for the next thirty years, American congressional leaders debate on what to do with these large numbers of Spanish speakers. Meanwhile, parents beg for their archaic Spanish speaking children to be educated in the English language but are totally ignored.
