9780742508934: Charting a New Course: The Politics of Globalization and Social Transformation

For decades F. H. Cardoso has been among the most influential of Latin American scholars, his writings on globalization, dependency, and politics having reached a world-wide audience.

This book, the third by Cardoso to appear in English, is the first to incorporate essays written during his tenure as president of Brazil. The transformation of Cardoso's economic and political approach is nowhere better documented than in this broad-ranging collection of writings that span Cardoso's early theoretical work through his pragmatic agenda for Brazil in a rapidly changing world economy. The book also traces the development of one of the world's leading intellectuals, who took theory into the arena of policy when he became head of state.

About the Author:

Fernando Henrique Cardoso was president of Brazil from 1995–2002. His previously translated books include Dependency and Development in Latin America and The New Global Economy in the Information Age: Reflections on Our Changing World. Mauricio A. Font is professor of sociology at Queens College CUNY, and director of the Bildner Center for Western Hemisphere Studies.

Review:

This volume should be of particular interest to Latin Americanists and others interested in globalization and particularly its impact on developing nations. Public and academic library collecions, upper-division undergraduate and up. (Choice Magazine)

A useful account of the remarkable academic and political career of Brazilian President Fernando Henrique Cardoso. Covering almost 30 years, beginning with Cardoso's academic work, then his political statements as a senator and government minister, and finally his presidential speeches. (Foreign Affairs)

This fusion of a strong belief in scientifically based academic analysis with political malleability is one of the most fascinating aspects of Cardoso's performance as president. (Foreign Affairs)
