9780743218177: Traditonal Candlewicking

Developed by America's pioneer women in the early 1800s, candlewicking used only the simplest of materials readily to hand -- muslin, cotton, and the thread from which it derived its name, the cotton twist yarn used as a wick in candlemaking.

Traditional fabrics are still used today, though now they are of better quality and the variety of threads available is extensive. The traditional colour of cream is still most favoured, although some subtle colours are now creeping in.

The twenty-four designs in this book by an Australian teacher of the art are divided into groups suitable for the family room, the living room, the sewing room, the bedroom and the garden. There are designs to suit all levels of ability, from beginner to advanced. All are heavily illustrated with patterns, designs and photographs, and all necessary techniques and stitches are fully explained.

From Booklist:

A guide reprinted four times in Australia makes its way to the U.S., where, ironically, the art of candlewicking began. Meldrum revives and translates this white-on-white or cream-on-cream embroidery for the millennium, starting with the question of using colored threads or not. (Her vote is no, from the purist perspective.) Equipment--the fabrics, threads, needles, and hoops--is detailed first, followed by an illustrated 16-stitch dictionary. More than 25 patterns are featured, and for each pattern the author indicates materials needed, gives step-by-step directions, offers graphs for stitch types, and adds color photographs grouped by room.
