ea. vol: illus. by Colin McNaughton. unpaged. (Red Nose Readers Series). CIP. Random. Sept. 1985. PG $3.95; PLB $5.99. Kindergarten-Grade 1 A quartet of zany word and concept books whose bright droll illustrations and amusing situations will tickle the funnybones of children just beginning to read. Each contains three or four short sections, each of which explores a concept. Big Bad Pig illustrates the concepts big and little, in and out, and fast, square and spotty . Included in Fee Fi Fo Fum are cause and effect addition statements such as "rain + sun = rainbow." Opposite pairs are depicted in Happy Worm. In the title story of Help! successively larger and more gruesome creatures (each clearly labeled) enter a little boy's bedroom, scaring one another until they all flee when the boy stands up with his sheet around him and says, "Boo!" The simple use of words and the clear comic illustrations make these books both appealing and useful, even in special education or English as a second language classes for older students, as they are such fun that even teenagers would enjoy them. Although the books are small, the illustrations are large enough for the books to be used in a story hour. Louise L. Sherman, Anna C. Scott School, Leonia, N.J.
