Kindergarten-Grade 2-- This book is introduced only by a poem on the front flap. Inside the cover, there is a map of Our Village, but otherwise, there are no titles to the poems, nor any indicators as to where this village is or in which period the poems are supposed to be set. The poems are funny, but not great poetry; frequently the lines are filled out by an inventive repetition of words, as though the poet were at a loss for an appropriate iamb or alternative. The pictures are cartoon-like and full of motion and humor, but the historical detail with which the poems are frequently concerned do not appear in them. The result is a volume with some occasionally entertaining character vignettes and some interesting illustrations, but the two do not merge into an artistic whole, so the volume seems without purpose or vision. --Ruth K. MacDonald, Perdue University Calumet, Hammond, Ind. Grades 3-6

Yeoman and Blake create an entire village, from the maps on the endpapers to the the poems within the pages, which introduce both people and places: a washer woman " pegs the washing up to dry, / like brightly colored kites, " and " Headache, nosebleed, / Cough or fluDr. Potts / Knows what to do." A gardener grows oversized plants, but he is the smallest man in town; a tailor is too busy to notice how much his own clothing needs to be replaced or patched. And a pond in winter has "a coating of ice like a great windowpane." The characters frolic on the pages, in Blake's loose-lined, flowing art. And the result of both poems and pictures is a strong sense of place, where readers will meet town eccentrics and ordinary folk, tumbling through the book, busy with their lives. Ages 6-8.
