From School Library Journal:

A gentle story with a ring of truth describes the friendship of a rabbit, two dogs, and a brother and sister. Ben, an elderly yellow Lab, finds a small, lost baby rabbit in the snow; the children carry her home, revive her, and name her Zoe. They believe Ben thinks Zoe is a puppy, and that she thinks he is a large rabbit. At any rate, they become loving companions. When Ben dies, a new black-and-white puppy becomes their friend and grows up thinking he is a large rabbit, too. The simple, musical text is accompanied by soft-toned, watercolors that show life throughout the year on a small, comfortable farm with plump, large-eyed animals and sweet-faced children. Print and pictures are enclosed in frames for a well-balanced, pleasant format with good leading for readability. --Patricia Pearl, First Presbyterian School, Martinsville, VA

From Publishers Weekly:

This deceptively simple story possesses a distinctive warmth all its own. A small boy tells of the bond that forms between Ben, the family dog, and Zoe, a lost rabbit that the boy and his sister Becky adopt. Each animal thinks the other is one of its own species: "They didn't know they'd got it wrong. Becky said we wouldn't tell them." One day old Ben dies; the children and their rabbit grieve. A puppy is found in the hay, however, and becomes a loving friend to the threesome--and Zoe thinks the new dog, Little Ben, is a rabbit also. Filled with affectionate details of country life, Firth's pastel-colored washes and Waddell's theme--new bonds forming even in the aftermath of loss--will be a source of comfort. Ages 4 - 7.
