From School Library Journal:

In the belief that the fables attributed to Aesop are more entertaining and enjoyable to children without the morals so often accompanying them, Clark has fashioned a delightful collection of 27 of these tales. All are told in an informal but direct fashion, highlighting the personalities of each animal or human character. The stories are brief--rarely more than one page long--and set in surprisingly readable italics appropriate to the casual tone of the fables. Beautifully displayed with the text are Voake's accomplished illustrations. Dominated by sepia tones, these watercolor washes with fine ink details capture the distinct mood and wit of each fable. At times reminiscent of 18th-century fashions and furnishings, each of these pictures is essential to the overall visual effect. With the plethora of such collections available, there may seem little need for one more. But this fresh and very contemporary interpretation of Aesop's wisdom will make readers realize why the fables have endured. More suitable for independent reading or sharing one-on-one, this collection reflects age-old stories that every child can understand and enjoy. --Denise Anton Wright, Library Book Selection Service, Inc., Bloomington, IL

From Publishers Weekly:

The genial tone and presentation of the 30 selections in this compilation reflect Clark's belief that Aesop's tales are entertaining in their own right, and not merely--nor even primarily--as vehicles for instruction. Traditionalists may miss each story's familiar punchline summation, but little matter: the same keen observations about human foibles shine through, albeit between the lines. The text is crisp and pithy, with a fresh, unforced contemporary flavor well suited to reading aloud. Voake's illustrations range from full spreads to small spots and decorations; they all contain her sly wit and deft touch with character and line. In this format they often serve to set a mood or provide a visual frame of reference rather than explicate plot, and for this reason the book may appeal most to those at the upper end of the suggested age range. This is a more extensive and somewhat sharper collection than the recent, elegant Aesop from Lisbeth Zwerger. Ages 4-8.
