PreS-Gr 1--Sam and Alice are spending the day together on Sam's farm. They hear the clucking that heralds the laying of an egg, find the egg, begin to take it to Sam's house, quarrel, break the egg, hear more clucking, find a new egg, and transport it triumphantly home. This simple tale of anger and reconciliation is sweetly illustrated in double-spread, sunlit, colored-pencil illustrations. Lewis knows her young audience and she knows how to render enough detail in her drawings to tousle the children's hair and make readers yearn to pat the sheep dog. She shows the clutter of the barn and the varied vegetation around it and, at the same time, directs youngsters' attention to the central figures in the story. You can almost smell the hay. Masterful.
