About the Author:
Louisa Somerville used to be a primary school teacher, but has now been writing books for children for nearly 20 years. She has written on a wide range of subjects from aardvarks to ziggurats, as well as poems, activity books and a best-selling anthology of bedtime stories.
From School Library Journal:
Grade 5-8. Lewis takes readers on an armchair journey through various cultures in history. The explorations are not necessarily chronological but highlight major themes of art history, focusing upon the Vikings, traders in the East, and pioneers of the West. The legendary travels of Jason and the Golden Fleece from Greek mythology and various Biblical voyages are included. In the course of the discussion, many specific and unusual facts are revealed. Somerville gives an overview of the depiction of animals in art, beginning with the materials used by cavemen. Both books include boxed sidebars that feature ideas for art projects, detailed explanations of a particular artist or subject, and questions that lead youngsters to further explorations. Short biographical sketches of the artists discussed are appended. These titles stimulate an understanding of art and encourage students to create their own works of art. Teachers, librarians, art instructors, and museum affiliates will find limitless possibilities for this series.?Patricia Mahoney Brown, Benjamin Franklin Elementary School, Kenmore, NY
