9780745335186: Reconstructing Karl Polanyi

Karl Polanyi was one of the most influential political economists of the twentieth century and is widely regarded as the most gifted of social democratic theorists. In Reconstructing Karl Polanyi, Gareth Dale, one of the foremost scholars of Polanyi, provides a sweeping survey of his contributions to the social sciences. Polanyi’s intellectual and political outlook can best be summarised through paradoxical formulations such as ‘liberal socialist’ and ‘cosmopolitan patriot’. In exploring these paradoxes, Dale draws upon a wide array of primary sources to reconstruct Polanyi’s views on a range of topics that have been neglected in the critical literature, including the history of antiquity, the evolution and dynamics of Stalin’s Russia, McCarthyism and his critical dialogue with Marxism. Dale also analyses Polanyi’s relevance to current issues, notably the ‘clash’ between democracy and capitalism, and the nature and trajectory of European unification. This is an essential and original study for anyone interested in the formation and application of social democracy.

About the Author:

Gareth Dale is Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations at Brunel University, England. His previous books include First the Transition, then the Crash (Pluto, 2011) and Karl Polanyi: The Limits of the Market (Polity, 2010).

Review:

"Dale not only evokes the spirit of Karl Polanyi in his erudite book and clarifies the key cornerstones of Polanyi's thinking, but also shows what practical and actual lessons can be learned from Polanyi from the perspective of socialist movements....A great asset for the universal left in the critique of capitalist market economy." (Tamás Krausz, author of Reconstructing Lenin: An Intellectual Biography)

"Indispensable for understanding and applying Polanyian thought. Dale's book is a model of critical scholarship, placing Polanyi in historical context and skillfully tracing the development of his theory." (Wolfgang Streeck, Emeritus Director of the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies)

"Revitalises, brings back, and inverts Polanyi’s thought."  (Alicia Girón, National University of Mexico)

"No one digs deeper than Dale into Polanyi’s mindset, into his politics as well as his scholarship." (Chris Hann, Director of the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, Germany)

Karl Polanyi s contribution to political economy and social science is immeasurable. In Reconstructing Karl Polanyi, Gareth Dale, foremost scholar and biographer of Polanyi, provides a sweeping survey of his contributions to the social sciences. An opponent of traditional economics and a believer in economics contingency to society and culture, Polanyi s work has a cross-disciplinary appeal, finding popularity in anthropology, economic history, economic sociology and political science. Paradoxical formulations, such as liberal socialist and cosmopolitan patriot , are often used to describe Polanyi s intellectual and political vision. In exploring these paradoxes, Dale draws upon original writings and transcripts to reconstruct Polanyi s views on a range of topics long neglected in critical literature; including the history of antiquity, the evolution and dynamics of Stalin s Russia, McCarthyism and Polanyi s critical dialogue with Marxism. Accompanying the reconstruction of his work is Dale s analysis of Polanyi s relevance to current issues, notably the clash between democracy and capitalism, and the nature and trajectory of European unification. This proves an indispensable critical guide to Polanyian thought. Book Description Pluto Press. Paperback. Book Condition: new. BRAND NEW, The Reconstructing Karl Polanyi, Gareth Dale, Karl Polanyi was one of the most influential political economists of the twentieth-century and is widely regarded as the most gifted of social democrat theorists. In Reconstructing Karl Polanyi, Gareth Dale draws upon primary sources archived in the countries that Polanyi called home-Hungary, Austria, Britain, the USA and Canada-to provide a sweeping survey of his contribution to the social sciences. Polanyi's intellectual and political outlook can best be summarised through paradoxical formulations such as 'romantic modernist,' 'liberal socialist,' and 'cosmopolitan patriot.' In exploring these paradoxes, Dale excavates and reconstructs Polanyi's views on a range of topics that have been neglected in the critical literature, including Keynesian economic policy, the evolution and dynamics of Stalin's Russia, regional integration, and McCarthyism. He reconstructs and reinterprets Polanyi's philosophy of history, his theory of democracy, and his economic historiography of Ancient Greece and Mesopotamia, and guides readers through his critical dialogue with Marxism. While the central threads and motifs of this study are intellectual-historiographical in nature, Dale also critically analyses the views of Polanyi and his followers on issues of pressing present-day relevance, notably the 'clash' between democracy and capitalism, and the nature and trajectory of European unification.
