Many obituaries have been written for Egypt’s attempted revolution. But for Philip Marfleet, the revolution is an ongoing process best understood by examining the complex, changing relations among its principal actors. In Egypt, Marfleet gives a robust, wide-lens account of the political struggle unfolding from just before the “Arab Spring” of 2011 to the summer of 2015.

In his exploration of the events unfolding in Egypt over these tumultuous five years, Marfleet asks what can be learned from Egypt and the political upheavals that continue to affect societies in the Middle East and throughout the global south. Testimonies from participants across the political spectrum explore their engagements in the streets, workplaces, campuses, and neighborhoods, in addition to the formal political arena. Drawing on considerable primary research, Egypt offers one of the best participant-orientated accounts of the country’s struggle published to date.

About the Author:

Philip Marfleet is associate director of the Centre for Research on Migration, Refugees and Belonging. He is author of Migration, Theory and Culture, and co-editor with Rabab El-Mahdi of Egypt: The Moment of Change.

Review:

"Braced by the sheer size of Egypt’s popular uprisings of 2011 as well as their ubiquity, Phil Marfleet challenges conventional accounts surrounding the overthrow of the Mubarak regime. Based on his long observation of contemporary Egypt as activist and scholar, Marfleet’s Egypt: Contested Revolution provides readers with a sophisticated examination of the origins of the uprisings and their future – a prospect that he notes elicits anxiety at the highest levels of the state."
  (Tareq Ismael, University of Calgary)

Book Description PLUTO PRESS, United Kingdom, 2016. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. The tumultuous events that began in Egypt in 2011 have embraced revolution and counter-revolution. For Philip Marfleet, they are a complex and continuing process in which millions of people from a range of political formations and socio-economic and religious backgrounds became `agents of change . Amidst a surge of publishing on the `Arab Spring this book aims to close a critical gap by examining the specific character and composition of the Egyptian struggle. The social and cultural initiatives that constituted `the carnival of the oppressed come alive in the testimonies of participants across the political spectrum, allowing us to explore activist engagements in the streets, workplaces, campuses and neighbourhoods, as well as in the formal political arena. Following the 2011 revolution was, the Ittihaiddya demonstrations, the anti-Mursi marches and countless smaller protests, rallies, mass meetings, community mobilisations and labour actions, which indicate that the revolutionary energy is undiminished. With this in mind, Marfleet asks what can be learned from the Egyptian case about political upheavals that continue to affect societies of the Global South. Five years after the start of the `Arab Spring , this offers one of the best participant-orientated accounts of the country s struggle. Seller Inventory # AAJ9780745335513
