Young Imogen Burnhope and her maid Rhoda board a non-stop train to Oxford to visit her Aunt Cassandra, who waits on the platform at Oxford station where the train terminates, to greet them. Only they never arrive. The train is searched and the coachman swears he saw them board a first-class carriage, but they seem to have vanished into thin air. When he learns his daughter is missing, Sir Marcus Burnhope contacts Scotland Yard for help and Inspector Colbeck and Sergeant Leeming are assigned to the case. Is it a merely a case of a runaway girl? Or is there a more sinsister, larger conspiracy at work?

About the Author:

Edward Marston was born and brought up in South Wales. A full-time writer for over thirty years, he has worked in radio, film, television and the theatre, and is a former chairman of the Crime Writers’ Association. He is the author of sixty crime novels set in seven distinct periods of history, and a master of historical fiction. He is the author of the hugely successful Railway Detective series.

Review:

I’m a fan of Edward Marston’s Inspector Colbeck detective series. I like the coolly heroic Colbeck and his slightly fuddy-duddy side-kick, Detective Sergeant Leeming. Their characters are well-rounded and believable; the author’s research into the workings of the railways is impeccable but never intrusive; and there are enough twists and turns of the plot to keep the reader involved and interested. (Historical Novels Review)

"Ticket to Oblivion is the thirteenth full-length novel in the Railway Detective series but it works well as a stand-alone novel. It is a book that is full of action, with some enjoyably humorous scenes... The author skilfully inserts the brutal facts about the injustice of the class system in Victorian England, where a wealthy and powerful man can commit murder and expect to walk away free, and creates genuine concern about the fates of the two foolish young women caught in a cruel and potentially fatal trap. The Railway Detective series gets stronger all the time and Ticket to Oblivion is a thoroughly enjoyable read." (Carol Westron, Promoting Crime Fiction Blog)
