Life in Shrewsbury is normally calm and uneventful. However, when the River Severn bursts its banks, a body is discovered floating in a flooded cottage. Coroner Martha Gunn is one of the first to be called to the scene. In the fetid cottage Martha’s instincts tell her that this is a homicide -- a hunch borne out by the post mortem. The victim is presumed to be the cottage’s tenant, James Humphreys, who recently went missing. However, when asked to identify the body, his wife Cressida is adamant that it is not her husband. Martha Gunn is left with many perplexing questions. Who, then, is the victim? Why has he been murdered? And where has the real Mr. Humphreys gone?

About the Author:
PRISCILLA MASTERS was born in Halifax and is one of seven adopted children. The family moved to South Wales where she lived until she was sixteen when she went to Birmingham to work and then to train as a nurse. She is married to a GP and now lives in Shropshire. She works part-time as a nurse.
Review:
The role of the Coroner as detective is a unique perspective from which to play out a murder mystery and in Priscilla Master's able hands it is very successful. Martha Gunn is a well developed character who could easily feature in a series of books. Her relationship with Detective Inspector Randall looks like it might become interesting, although he is evidently married, and the antics at home with her two young children and the au pair balance out her intense concentration at her job. A very enjoyable read. --I Love a Mystery

Gunn is an engaging character, trying to maintain her private life, raising twins, with her public life as coroner of Shrewsbury. I really look forward to many more stories about her from Priscilla Masters. . . . Masters is also the author of 11 DI Joanna Piercy books set in Staffordshire, and three non-series books. For those of you, who like me, prefer to start at the beginning, here's your chance." --REVIEWINGTHEEVIDENCE.COM
