9780749474195: Managing and Leading People Through Organizational Change: The Theory and Practice of Sustaining Change Through People

Tremendous forces for change are radically reshaping the world of work. Disruptive innovations, radical thinking, new business models, and resource scarcity are impacting every business sector.  Although the scale of expected change is not unprecedented, what is unique is the pervasive nature of the change and its accelerating pace.  While structures, systems, processes, and strategies are relatively simple to understand and even fix, people are more complex. Change can have a different impact on each individual, which can cause different attitudes and reactions.

Managing and Leading People through Organizational Change provides a critical analysis of change and transformation in organizations from both a theoretical and practical perspective.  It addresses the individual, team, and organizational issues of leading and managing people before, during and after change, using case studies and interviews with people from organizations in different industries across the globe. Each chapter includes learning objectives, boxed summaries, diagrams/models, case examples with questions, exercises, and a list of references and further reading.

About the Author:

Julie Hodges is the MBA Programme Director at Durham University Business School.  She is the co-author of Sustaining Change in Organizations (Sage Publications) and co-editor of Public and Third Sector Leadership (Emerald Group Publishing).

Review:

"In this valuable book Hodges moves beyond the technical aspects of change and the focus on overcoming resistance from individuals. Instead she focuses on people, providing practical recommendations based on frameworks and theories from the academic literature as well as comprehensive examples from practitioner experiences. In this way readers from industry, academics, and students will all deepen understanding about how to engage individuals collaboratively in transformational processes as organizational change is implemented."
(Deirdre Anderson, Senior Lecturer in Organizational Behaviour Cranfield School of Management)

"For change managers and people leading organisation change, Managing and Leading People through Organizational Change is a great reminder of existing theories and concepts with real life examples from the author and professionals. Additionally it seeks to examine the latest innovations and research and their relevance in the workplace. This book successfully translates theory into practise with realistic scenarios for reference. The insights into the experience of others is invaluable. A must for executives and managers!"
(Christine Hartridge, Commercial Manager Philips UK)

"Managing and Leading People through Organizational Change is a brilliant book packed with information that delivers immediate benefits to both practising professionals and management students. This clearly structured book connects theoretical concepts with timely practical examples and compelling case studies and provides valuable recommendations. This is a must-read for every professional leader and manager and is inspirational also for those dealing with people on a day-to-day basis."
(Jeanny Paren, Client Development Manager EMEA Thomson Reuters)

"All too often the people aspect is ignored in both organizational change practice and theory. Not so with this book. This is a refreshing read for practitioners, scholars and students alike based on the simple philosophy that change is all about people. This book will enable everyone with an interest and drive for leadership and management responsibilities to better engage with those we work for: our people. Because it is only through our people that we will ever deliver successful change."
(Professor Rune Todnem By, Editor-in-Chief, Journal of Change Management Co-founder, the Public Leadership Foundation)

"Julie Hodges has built her experience both by practicing and researching change in organisations. In this new book, Hodges puts people at the heart of organisational change. People need to be understood enough and included to be engaged and committed. Change can be complex and misunderstood – just like human beings. This book can help greatly: it provides insights on people’s emotions and decision making process without falling into overly complex considerations or debate. Furthermore it equips the people who need to lead or manage change with some very practical tools and techniques."
(Cyril Lebel, Client Service Partner, Customer Presales and Service - Americas Vodafone Global Enterprise)

"Despite them being a growing field of focus, we still see organizational change initiatives undertaken without regard given to possible people impacts and responses. This book is comprehensive in its deliberation of people responses to change and the role of those supporting, leading and managing the change process from planning through implementation and review. It effectively combines theoretical and practical approaches to deliver an insightful and comprehensive consideration of the people aspects of change management in the context of accelerating global change and disruption."
(Elizabeth Strong, Regional Manager Asia & EMEA, Human Resources Qantas Airlines)

"This book explains and articulates that managing change cannot be done without understanding human emotion. It is the combination of this understanding with practical tools and guidance that makes this book so relevant and so effective for individuals, leaders, HR managers and organizations alike."
(Tom Woolgar, Director, Corporate Banking Scotia Bank)
