Gr 5-7--This title is intended to describe the development of agriculture around the world from the Stone Age to the present. Unfortunately, its success is very limited. Each two-page chapter covers a different aspect of farming as it has evolved throughout history. A large full-color illustration usually appears in the center of each chapter. It is surrounded by six-to-eight smaller pictures with captions that take up more space than the main text. The text itself is marred by incomplete and inaccurate information and sweeping statements. Terminology does not always match the topic being discussed, such as when a caption refers to tractors that pull plows and harrows and the picture shows a caterpillar pulling a land leveler. The description of a cultivator sounds more like that of a harrow. Concepts such as fish farming and aquaculture are not clearly defined and the description of how a combine operates is misleading. The growing of cotton is tucked into the corner of a chapter entitled "Are They Farms?" The book concludes with an index and a useless glossary that contains empty verbiage. This import should not have made the trip.
