ea. vol: photogs. by Chris Fair clough. 32p. charts. maps. glossary. index. (My Heritage Series). Watts. Sept. 1985. PLB $9.40. Grade 3-6Rather than presenting the "facts" about religions, these volumes give a sense of how a religion affects the life of a single family. In each case an author and photographer show a 10- or 11-year-old child participating in fes tivals, worship and daily activities af fected by religious beliefs. In this way, everyday aspects such as diet and dress relate to the holy days which are some times stressed in introductions to dif ferent religions. The color photographs further personalize the subject matter. The books contain brief first-person narrations by a child, printed in bold face type, followed by a third-person explanation by the author. The vol umes contain brief descriptions of reli gious history and sacred writings. A calendar of major holidays, a glossary, index and set of statistics appear at the end of each volume. Although the fam ilies studied live in England, the British setting is not pervasive. The most seri ous flaw is sloppy layout, which causes some pictures to be cut off in the gutter or on the outside edge. In one case this includes parts of the text in an explana tion of the Hebrew alphabet.Kathy Piehl, Mankato State Univ., Minn.
