Allan Ahlberg, a former teacher, postman, plumber's mate and grave digger, is in the super-league of children's writers. He has published over 100 children's books and, with his late wife Janet, created such award winning picture books as EACH PEACH PEAR PLUM and THE JOLLY POSTMAN - both winners of the Kate Greenaway Medal. He has also written prize-winning poetry and fiction and lives in Sussex.
PreSchool-Grade 1-- Two titles to tickle young funnybones. In Dinosaur Dreams three skeletons--two humans and one dog--each dream about dinosaur bones doing crazy and wacky things such as riding on roller skates and swimming with inner tubes. The skeletons enter each others' dreams, adding a nice twist to the story. In Mystery Tour , the trio travels from place to place, uncovering answers about the dark shadowy shapes they see. The text in both books is reminiscent of The Teeny-Tiny Woman (Clarion, 1984) by Paul Galdone and In a Dark Dark Room (HarperCollins, 1985) by Alvin Schwartz, with much repetition that children will love and try themselves. The skeletons are friendly looking, with grins pervading. Bright watercolor illustrations are set against an appropriate black background, lending an air of spookiness. Two more funnier-than-spooky entries for an audience often looking for good material in this genre. --Leslie Barban, Richland County Public Library, Columbia, SC
