Each year Tradmouth holds a festival and regatta to celebrate John Palkin, a fourteenth century Mayor who made his fortune from trade and piracy. But during last year's Festival a young woman went missing.
When a woman's body is found dressed in medieval costume floating in a dinghy on the river, DI Wesley Peterson wonders if she is the missing girl. But then she is identified as Kassia Graylem, a musician with a mysterious past. Is there is link to last year's disappearance? And is there a connection with a fantasy website called Shipworld which features Palkin as a supernatural hero with a faceless enemy called the Shroud Maker?
As archaeologist Neil Watson makes a sinister discovery on the site of Palkin's warehouse and the crew of a visiting replica medieval ship come under suspicion, it looks as if history might have inspired Kassia's killer and it is only by delving into the past that Wesley learns the truth...a truth that brings mortal danger in its wake.
