Grade 2-6-- A far-flung, eclectic group of 30 poems that invites readers to celebrate words. Among the selections are "Who Is De Girl?" by John Agard, Lewis Carroll's "Jabberwocky," and "The Jumblies" by Edward Lear. But sometimes the idea and the beat fall short. Songs familiar in their original form are printed here without music, becoming flat and losing their rhythm. The result is poetry that is awkward to read and to understand. A do-it-yourself section, stuck willy-nilly in the middle of the book, is a good idea but gimmicky; "Stufferation," which Mitchell wrote and uses as one of his examples is filled with enigmatic references and wordplay. A note of caution: blank lines in this section could elicit unwanted scribblings. Lloyd's slightly distorted figures with white edges and the jagged outlines around each watercolor illustration mimic paper collages, resulting in a look that echoes a combination of Maira Kalman's jazzy illustrations and Leo Lionni's collage art. While the format and illustrations indicate a primary-grade audience, most of the poetry would not be appreciated or understood by younger children. Some entries are too obtuse, others are too nonsensical, and others clearly do not speak to a child's ear, even if they do have a beat. --Jane Marino, White Plains Public Library, NY
