Charlie Samuels studied at the University of Oxford before beginning a career in publishing that has lasted over 20 years. He has written hundreds of articles and dozens of books for younger readers, particularly about historical, cultural and military subjects. He has also contributed to and edited many illustrated reference encyclopedias for the British and American markets. He lives in London, where his nephews and godchildren are happy to tell him how to be a better writer.
This large-format book combines information about types of WWII propaganda with well-chosen photos, posters, and documents from the era. After a general introduction, separate chapters offer accounts of British, German, American, Soviet, and Japanese propaganda, while the final chapter considers France and Italy. Though it ends rather abruptly, this account of World War II propaganda is well researched, clearly written, and supported with good visual examples and short quotes from period sources. At least one color image appears on each double-page spread, along with sidebars and black-and-white illustrations. Besides the expected back matter, the book concludes with 17 short biographies and maps showing the war in Europe and Asia. From the World War II Sourcebook series, this colorful volume provides an accessible introduction to propaganda as it was shaded to meet each government’s goals. Grades 7-9. --Carolyn Phelan
