The Natural World: Planet Earth and its Billions of Species in Maps and Infographics (Mapographica)

9780750291545: The Natural World: Planet Earth and its Billions of Species in Maps and Infographics (Mapographica)

Be amazed by the real-life size of the world's largest spider; discover which animal can jump the equivalent of a human leaping over a skyscraper; measure the length of a blue whale in buses, people, and basketball courts; and more!

From the animal classification system and DNA to reproduction, food webs, and the world's fastest animals, this book explores the natural world using a wide variety of icons, graphics, and pictograms.

Highly visual and accessible, infographics are an increasingly popular way to introduce complex stats, facts, and figures to children, helping them to digest complex information on a number of topics.

About the Author:

Jon Richards has 20 years of experience within the publishing industry working for Marshall Editions, Aladdin Children's Books, DK, and Tall Tree. As well as editing books, he is the author of more than 50 titles, mainly for children, on topics such as the environment and technology. He has lived in London and Sydney, and has traveled extensively throughout Europe, South and North America, Australasia, and Africa.

During his 20 years in publishing, Ed Simkins has worked for Reuters, David West Children's Books, Marshall Editions, Egmont and Tall Tree. In that time he has designed hundreds of titles for both children and adults. He lives in London, England.

From School Library Journal:

Gr 3-6-These loosely defined titles use visuals to explain their topics. With captioned pictographs, Natural World begins with the classification of living things and then includes microscopic organisms, energy production, genetics, reproduction, food webs, and evolution. It continues with examples of animal and plant extremes and endangered species. Planet Earth starts off with the Earth's composition, moves through tectonic plates, the rock cycle, earthquakes and volcanoes and then presents features like mountains and rivers. Each title concludes with a spread on today's environmental problems. The more complex topics tend to be about cycles e.g., energy production, (World), rock and water (Earth) and use diagrams that are readily available elsewhere. Time lines, maps, webs, and graphs are used but many of the infographics are simply rich pictures; a single graphic accompanied with a caption or labels. Some of the images need more explanation while others hardly fit the definition of infographic. Proportions are sometimes skewed and the pages get cluttered. Full-color backgrounds overlaid with brightly colored shapes, reminiscent of Lois Ehlert's earliest works, are used throughout. The contrasting text varies in size and boldness for added emphasis. In spite of some flaws, as an introduction to infographics or for die-hard data devourers, these titles will find their audience.-Carol S.
