For over 50 years this textbook has been one of the standard reference works for the student and practising engineer in the motor industry. This edition has been extensively revised with much new material. The well-established plan remains, and it aims to provide a clear and simple approach to all subjects from elementary principles up to the most advanced design technology. Parts 2 and 3 have been extended and revised to cover recent developments, including those in piston and ring design, carburettors, crankshaft design and materials, and petrol injection. The section devoted to emissions has been rewritten and a new section has been added on catalytic conversion. Two unit-injection systems, Cummins and GM now feature in the chapter on diesel injection. Details of both petrol and diesel engine design are discussed and a section has been added on the Stirling engine. There have also been revisions to Part 4 which now includes discussion of traction-control differentials, four-wheel drive, anti-locking and regenerative braking. A number of other advances are covered such as suspension, springing and gearbox design. The latter includes details on the multi-speed splitter principle and the Maxwell and Ricardo ALT automatic transmissions for buses and cars respectively.

The Motor Vehicle has been an essential reference work for both the student and practicing engineer ever since the first edition appeared in 1929. Today it is as indispensable to anyone with a serious interest in the subject as it was then. The current edition has been revised to include coverage of material detailing the latest knowledge and practice relating to engine control, fuels, carburetion, super and turbo-charging and much more. The established layout of the book is retained, with topics relating to the Engine, Transmission and Carriage Unit dealt with in turn. Each chapter is well supported with diagrams, sections, schematics and photographs, all of which contribute to a clear and concise exposition of the material under discussion.About the Author:
