Jill Diana Warner, CertEd, Personnel Manager, Macqueen Veterinary Centre; Devizes, WiltshireReview:
ASSESSING VETERINARY NURSES IN PRACTICE
JILL DIANA WARNER
For those who are either potentially or currently involved in assessing veterinary nurses in the UK, issues such as planning assessment, appeals procedures and the standardisation of assessment procedures can prove as, or perhaps even more, daunting than undertaking the assessment itself. Assessing Veterinary Nurses in Practice, by Jill Diana Warner may help allay those anxieties.
The paperback volume is set out in a logical order and the heavily-jargoned text is broken up by many examples of assessment. This format allows time to process the information from the body of the text.
The author’s style is quite relaxed but, happily, this does not compromise the gravity of her subject matter. The layout is akin to that of a lecturer’s notes, which enhances the book’s value as a reference text.
From the perspective of a foreign veterinary nurse with little exposure to the UK veterinary nursing training system, the reference table of common abbreviations was invaluable, as was chapter two – Assessor Training.
The book is broken into six short chapter, and follows what could almost be a chronological order, starting with a brief history on veterinary nursing training.
The CD that accompanies the book has a list of very user-friendly, in unrefined, forms for use in the widespread Microsoft Word and Excel programs. It was particularly pleasing to note that the forms were in a format easily accessed by most desktop PCs.
Despite the opinion that this edition will quickly become obsolete, and will require constant updating, Warner’s book would appear to have filled a void in the arena of veterinary nursing assessment; an area which is becoming ever more complex and legislation-bound. It should hold a place in every training practice as an easy to read and helpful reference, especially those training practices and assessors new to the system.
