9780750956574: Dead Letters (An Inspector Best Mystery)

The third book featuring Inspector Best is a dramatic murder mystery set against a historic 1880 tragedy

It is a beautiful warm August day in 1880: perfect weather for the annual Metropolitan Police Annual Fête held at Alexandra Palace. Inspector Best is summoned to uncover the identity of "Quicksilver" who has sent an anonymous note threatening to cause an horrific explosion at the event. When a second note is received and its threats become increasingly confusing with their literary allusions, Best seeks out the help of Helen Franks, a close friend from the past. However, is Quicksilver really intent on causing mass injury on this fine day, or is his desire of a more personal nature?

From the Author:

I first came upon mention of the Annual Metropolitan and City Police Fete at the Alexandra Palace when I was searching newspapers for baby-farming information for the previous Inspector Best novel. I was amazed by how big an event the Fete appeared to be and with what an ambitious programme. This included everything from West End shows to a circus. There were also eleven police bands, police athletics, balloon rides, a magic show, a fairground with the latest Three-Abreast Galloper steam roundabout, an orchestral concert, a Metropolitan Police Minstrel performance, and a firework display - you name it . . .  I was also surprised by the thousands of people the Fete attracted and the attention it received in the Press - even the Nationals.    I was casting around for a setting for the next Best novel and this seemed to be a full and fascinating one so I would not require the addition of a dramatic real-life event.  The Fete had sufficient potential drama. This time I would go it alone.      As usual a great deal of research would be necessary. Fortunately Bruce Castle Museum not only had much material about the Alexandra Palace but even some of the original Police Fete programmes.  These included detail about the attractions even down to a list of the particular fireworks which were to be used in the final spectacular show  - which would end up becoming a dramatic part of the plot.  I also knew that Inspector John George Littlechild, one of  the real-life detectives I included, was a member of the Metropolitan Police Minstrels - something else which became important.

About the Author:

Book Description Mystery Press. 1 Paperback(s), 2014. soft. Book Condition: New. It is a beautiful warm August day in 1880—perfect weather for the Metropolitan Police Annual Fête held at Alexandra Palace, in this third Inspector Best novel from former London policewoman Joan Lock. Best is summoned to uncover the identity of a provocateur who calls himself "Quicksilver" in a note threatening to cause a horrific explosion at the fête. After a second note is received, which only muddies the nature of the threat through its confusing literary allusions, Best seeks the help of Helen Franks, a close friend from the past, to decode the mysterious messages. Is Quicksilver really intent on causing mass murder, Best wonders, or is his desire of a more personal nature?"With thousands of Londoners attending the festivities, it will be almost impossible to uncover Quicksilver's plot. But if anyone can accomplish the impossible, it is Inspector Ernest Best. After laying on every on- and off-duty policemen in Greater London and trying to guess where Quicksilver will strike, Best is only partly successful in averting disaster. The main pavilion explodes, thankfully after being evacuated, but a woman dies on the merry-go-round, apparently poisoned. Multilayered, ingeniously plotted, atmospheric and suspenseful, with an appealing hero and attention-getting doses of both humor and tragedy, Lock's latest Inspector Best novel makes outstanding reading for historical mystery buffs."—Booklist (starred review) 221.
