Book Description Condition: New. While the book claims to be a study of the dining experience over 2,000 years of history, it is inevitably an eclectic mix of more focused topics. In nine essays, three in each chronological section (Roman, Middle Ages, Early Modern Europe), the authors explore the journey through the transformation of the dining experience into a highly symbolic and social occasion. The location of the dining experience, both indoors and outdoors, the furniture, table ware, decoration of the table and dining environment, the rituals of preparing and presenting food and drink, serving, consumption, etiquette and behaviour are all explored. The specific subjects covered are dining in Roman Gaul and Germany, Switzerland and Italy; Hanseatic table culture in northern Europe; pottery and manners in the Middle Ages; dining in the later Middle Ages; Tudor dining; eating at the Topkapi Palace; and al fresco dining in eighteenth-century England.
