9780752461786: Besieged Rhodes: A New History

Retelling the historic sieges of Rhodes through the eyes of the soldiers, this study challenges and revises current thinking on siege warfare and the use of the cannon Using eyewitness accounts, surviving guns, and extant walls, this book uniquely details the story of two famous sieges, and the efforts made by the Hospitallers to adapt their fortifications and artillery to defy the most powerful military power in the world. In doing so it rewrites the history of fortifications and gunpowder artillery during the Renaissance. In 1480 the Ottoman Turkish army and artillery that had defeated the Byzantine Empire arrived on Rhodes to attack the walled headquarters of the Crusading military order, the Knights Hospitaller. After a siege of three months during which time the Turks bombarded the walls daily with gunpowder weapons they withdrew, defeated. In 1522 they returned and, after a six-month siege, captured Rhodes but were unable to defeat the Hospitallers who were allowed to leave with their lives, arms, and religious emblems.

Book Description Book Condition: New. By the late fifteenth century Ottoman mastery of the Eastern Mediterranean was nearly complete. However, the tiny island of Rhodes remained a thorn in their side. Home to the Knights Hospitaller, Rhodes was besieged for three months in 1480 but emerged undefeated. The Ottomans attacked again in 1522 and, after six months, captured Rhodes but failed to defeat the Hospitallers, who left with their lives, arms and possessions. This book uses eyewitness accounts, surviving guns and extant walls to tell the story of these two sieges and to explore the relationship between gunpowder weapons and the fortifications built to defend against them.
