“Suddenly a hail of machine-gun bullets were fired in our direction, with one or two ripping into the canvas roof of my tractor a couple of feet from my head. I was standing up at the time with both hands gripping the top of the windscreen.” In the Face of the Enemy is an account of the author’s experiences in an artillery regiment with the British Expeditionary Force in 1939 and 1940 and, four years later, in North West Europe closing in on Nazi Germany. Ernest Powdrill joined the Territorials in 1935 and transferred to the Regular Army in 1938. By the time his regiment went to France in September 1939 he was a full sergeant in command of a 25-pounder Mark 1 gun.
