About the Author:

The National Maritime Museum (NMM) was formally established by Act of Parliament in 1934 and opened to the public by King George VI on 27 April 1937.

From Booklist:

Gr. 4-7. In this handsomely illustrated, fact-filled book, Wilkinson does more than take readers through a chronological evolution of maritime history. He makes each double-page spread a sliver of time and trivia unto itself. The text begins with the earliest developments of sailing vessels and covers all sorts of topics: war ships; slave trading; piracy; and myths and superstitions. He infuses each segment with straightforward information, and compelling facts, while the eye-catching layout stirs genuine emotion. Especially effective are some of the small captions that explain everything from the Bermuda Triangle to "limeys" to the legend of Odysseus and the sirens. Irresistible for browsing, this book is also an effective resource for reports, aided by a clear table of contents and glossary. Roger Leslie
