About the Author:

From School Library Journal:
Grade 5-9-A compendium of 21 previously published stories by authors from the United States, Great Britain, and New Zealand. There's enough variety here to please every sort of sports fan-soccer, tennis, track and field, cross-country, equestrian, basketball, kart racing, swimming, hockey, football, and more. Traditionalists will enjoy extracts from Durant's retelling of The Iliad, Matt Christopher's Wingman on Ice (Little, Brown, 1993), and Enid Bagnold's National Velvet. The selections aren't just about sports; they include themes of racism, friendship, respect, death, peer pressure, loyalty, and self-esteem. Philippa Pearce's "The Running Companion," Durant's "On Top of the World," Will Weaver's "Stealing for Girls," Malorie Blackman's "Contact," and Bill Naughton's "Spit Nolan" make excellent read-alouds. Readers can skip around easily until they discover a story to their liking. A solid addition to short-story collections.
